BUGLE
CALLS OF THE LIGHT DIVISION
During the Napoleonic Wars of the early 19th century,
General Sir John Moore recognised a need for 'Light Troops of Scouts and
Skirmishers' who could infiltrate enemy lines under their own initiative
with speed and efficiency. In 1803 the General formed The Light
Brigade at Shorncliffe on the Kent coast. With his methods and enlightened
ideas, General Moore condensed all the best Infantry principles into his
new Brigade of thinking, fighting and self disciplined soldiers.
It was this Brigade under the eventual command
of Major General Robert Crauford that played such an important part in
defeating Napoleon's Army in The Peninsula Wars.
