The story of the Guards begins in the 17th century. In 1656 the Grenadier Guards were formed as a personal body guard to King Charles II during his exile. The Coldstream Guards date back to 1650 when they were part of Cromwell's New Model Army, becoming Royal Troops at the time of the Restoration in 1660.
