Ralph Vaughan Williams was born at Down Ampney in Gloucestershire, after which he named one of his most famous hymns tunes in 1872 and died in London in 1958, aged eighty five.

He was very active in the collection of English folk song, by which many of his subsequent works were somewhat influenced. His major compositions include nine symphonies, operas and many fine choral and orchestral pieces.
